It was blissful, full of tranquillity, calm, peaceful, exciting, enjoyable, absolute serenity, l was smiling every morning because of the simple things.
When it comes to travelling l like to keep an open mind because the best experiences happen when you don’t plan them; then again l never plan to a certain extent l just do. l travelled to Ko Tao solo despite the negative image reported on media’s, l was turning 22 on the 22nd Jan and l had to book something asap. Having booked l read the reviews which made me feel rather sceptical because well who wouldn’t, l even packed one hour before departure. Somebody else’s opinion was weighing on me but, no doubt booking this was one of the best decisions l have ever made.
Ko Tao meaning turtle island forms part of the Samui–Pha-Ngan–Tao trio of islands, comparing these islands is fairly biased considering Ko Tao is the smallest in size, which on the positive side makes it super easy to wander through.
The island is known for world-class diving instruction also good for yoga & hiking, literally a tropical dream; with the perfect white sand beaches and crystal translucent water.
I stayed at The Dearly Koh Tao Hostel and this was my first time staying in a hostel, l just know everything is going downhill for my next hostel stays because frankly, The Dearly has set a high bar, it doesn’t get any better than that. It made me love Koh Tao, even more! The accommodation and facilities were spectacular, l felt at home and the staff never hesitated to go the extra mile and the people l met were just the cherries on top l didn’t want to leave. They don’t stop there! also offered is pickup and drop off service to and from the pier. (l paid 100THB at the time) it could be more it could be less.
The hostel is situated roughly 7-10 mins from Town and Chalok Baan Kao beach. Also situated close to the hostel:
- Taa Toh & Freedom Beach – 20 minutes walk
- Shark Bay – 15 minutes walk
- Saan Jao Beach – 10 minutes walk
- June Juea Bay – 25 minutes walk
- Sairee Beach – 10 minutes by scooter
- Sai Daeng Beach – 20 minutes by scooter
I’m sure l am being delusional now but I’ve seen Jaws so diving was never going to happen for me; although it does seem amazing it’s precisely a feeling no one can express having completed the course, nobody was ever able to give me a straight answer besides the utter satisfaction on the faces of the friends l watched do it; it was an inevitable experience for them. There are plenty diving schools on the islands and the majority provide and include accommodation in the price. Finding a school isn’t too difficult at all there is one situated in exactly every corner.
There is so much to do in Koh Tao! My favorite activity was most definitely the snorkeling tour with Oxygen Tour Koh Tao. I did the half day tour starting at 11:30am to roughly 18:00pm at 500baht (£12 / $16) on promotion through five bay/island stops. The trip itinerary and all that is included in the price can be found HERE. It is possible to book on the website, there isn’t a booking fee and the option to book now and pay on arrival is there, but l always find its best to guarantee your seat and pay online. Full day tours and other services are offered which can also be found on the website.
Besides diving, you can also:
- Spend an afternoon at Sairee beach
- Head to a viewpoint at Sunset; my favorite was Freedom Beach Viewpoint the hike was completely worth it. (Do not! wear slides/thongs or any sandals for this hike)
- Visit Koh Nang Yuan (Included in the Oxygen Snorkel Tour) 100baht entry fee.
- Chill at Natural High Cafe for obvious reasons *wink*
- Drink at Fishbowl Beach Bar
- Try as much food as you can
- RENT A BIKE & EXPLORE
- Party on the beaches
- Make sure to try a Banana Pancake
Like any other place in Thailand, it can get pretty busy during peak times (Jan-Mar & July-Sept). You don’t need a long time to explore Koh Tao considering the size and depending on if you’re doing a diving course; in comparison to the other two island that forms the trio, Koh Tao is still very popular. Perfect for travelers who prefer a little less energy and a little more relaxation.
